Shear conversion to tension

How does shear convert to tension using the strut & tie model in rebarring?

Hi Clement,

The effect of shear forces can be represented by so-called strut-and-tie models. Instead of considering shear efforts perpendicular to the concrete section, this Shear force is represented by inclined compression struts and, resulting from these, additional tension forces in the direction of the beam/slab. The internal forces are calculated by the equilibrium condition in every node of the truss. Thus, the combined effect of bending moment and shear can be evaluated like this.
